The Mountain Fire began in California’s Ventura County on Thursday at approximately 08:51 local time (LT), burning through 5 726 ha (14 148 acres) of land by 19:46 LT on the same day.
As of Wednesday evening at 19:46 LT, the fire remained uncontained at 0%, with its cause still under investigation.
At least 800 firefighters have been deployed to subdue the blaze along with ground resources and helicopters. Numerous structures have been impacted but the actual damages are yet to be assessed.
The blaze, measured at 607 ha (1 500 acres) as of 19:46 LT on Wednesday, has resulted in no reported fatalities or injuries but reports mention at least a dozen homes have been destroyed by the blaze with visuals showing several homes burning across the region.
Several road closures have been implemented due to the fire threat, including Northbound Lewis Road at Las Posas, eastbound Highway 118 at Wells Road, and westbound Highway 118 at Tierra Rejada Road.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Emergency Services, alongside the National Weather Service, are closely monitoring a significant Santa Ana wind event forecasted to impact Ventura County from Wednesday morning, November 6, through Friday, November 8.
Strong northeast winds are expected, with sustained speeds ranging from 48 – 89 km/h (30 – 55 mph), and gusts reaching up to 161 km/h (100 mph) in wind-prone mountainous regions. These windy conditions, paired with low relative humidity and poor overnight moisture recovery, have created challenging fire conditions.
In response, a Red Flag Warning has been issued from Wednesday at 04:00 LT through Thursday at 18:00 LT, covering all of Ventura County.
Given the heightened fire risk, 46 Southern California Edison electrical circuits are under close observation for a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS).
The period of concern for PSPS spans from November 6 at 03:00 LT to November 7 at 21:00 LT. If conditions in any area exceed Southern California Edison’s safety thresholds, electricity may be temporarily shut off to reduce the risk of igniting a wildfire.
