Strong M6.3 earthquake strikes near Te Anau, tsunami advisory canceled, New Zealand
A strong M6.3 earthquake struck 40 km (25 miles) north of Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand, at 21:14 NZST (09:14 UTC) on July 16, 2026, according to GeoNet. NEMA issued a National Advisory for tsunami activity for the western South Island coast from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point after the earthquake. The agency canceled the advisory after Earth Sciences NZ detected no tsunami signals for about two hours.

GeoNet placed the earthquake at a depth of 51 km (32 miles), described the shaking as strong, and recorded 18 532 felt reports.
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) issued a National Advisory for tsunami activity for the western South Island coast from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point after the earthquake. The advisory was canceled after Earth Sciences NZ detected no tsunami signals for approximately two hours.
USGS reported this quake as M5.9, 42 km (26 miles) north-northwest of Te Anau, at a depth of 76.4 km (47.5 miles). EMSC is reporting it as M5.9, 44 km (27 miles) north-northwest of Te Anau, at a depth of 68 km (42 miles).
GeoNet’s data showed a continuing local aftershock sequence near the same area, including M4.3 and several M3-range events after the mainshock.
1News reported that Queenstown Lakes District Council planned a precautionary engineer inspection of Edith Cavell Bridge and that motorists on the Crown Range were advised to watch for possible rocks or debris.


USGS PAGER estimated 3 000 people felt moderate shaking and 132 000 light. The agency issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly resistant to earthquake shaking, though some vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are reinforced masonry and unreinforced brick with timber floor construction.
