Red Flag Warning issued in parts of Alaska due to lightning threat
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect across large parts of Interior Alaska until 22:00 AKDT (06:00 UTC June 22) on June 21, 2026. Scattered thunderstorms capable of producing lightning are forecast across the region. This combines with low humidity, hot temperatures, and gusty winds to create critical fire weather conditions in interior Alaska.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 22:00 AKDT on June 21. Fire management agencies and field crews operating across the affected regions have been advised to remain alert for new fire starts and rapidly changing fire behavior near thunderstorms.
The warning covers the Middle Yukon Valley, Lower Yukon and Innoko Valleys, North Slopes of the Western Alaska Range, Upper Kuskokwim Valley, along with central and interior Alaska.
A combination of lightning-producing thunderstorms, very low relative humidity, unusually warm temperatures, and gusty winds is expected to create conditions favorable for wildfire ignition and rapid fire spread if new fires develop.
Scattered thunderstorms are forecast to continue across the warning area through Sunday evening. Lightning associated with these storms may ignite new fires in dry fuels, while localized and erratic winds near thunderstorms may complicate fire suppression efforts and accelerate fire growth.
Relative humidity is forecast to fall as low as 25% across affected areas. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach around 29°C (mid-80s °F) in the Middle Yukon Valley, Lower Yukon and Innoko Valleys, North Slopes of the Western Alaska Range, and Upper Kuskokwim Valley. Temperatures are forecast to climb to around 31°C (upper 80s °F) across the central and eastern Interior regions.
Wind gusts may reach 64 km/h (40 mph) in areas affected by thunderstorms. Overnight temperatures are forecast to drop to about 9°C (upper 40s °F) across western portions of the warning area and around 7°C (mid-40s °F) across the Central and Eastern Interior.
The NWS said critical fire weather conditions are expected through the weekend due to the combined effects of thunderstorm activity, low humidity, warm temperatures, and gusty winds.
