Lightning believed to have sparked a house fire in Chesterfield County, Virginia

Severe thunderstorms moving across central Virginia on Monday, July 6, 2026, are believed to have sparked a lightning-caused house fire in Chesterfield County, where firefighters extinguished an attic blaze within about 20 minutes and no injuries were reported.

Chesterfield Fire and EMS crews responded to a call for a house fire in the 600 block of Okuma Drive at 18:48 local time on Monday, July 6.

The first firefighters that arrived on scene found smoke and fire coming from the attic area of a two-story home. They were able to mark the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

One person was home at the time and was able to get out safely with their pets. There were no injuries.

“The fire is believed to have been sparked by lightning, as storms moved through the area this evening,” Chesterfield Fire and EMS said.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect across Chesterfield County was in effect through 19:15 local time (LT) on July 6.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Wakefield had issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for north central North Carolina, northwest North Carolina, central Virginia, south central Virginia, southwest Virginia, west central Virginia, and southeast West Virginia. Scattered thunderstorms and flash flooding were reported across these regions.
