3 children dead after boat capsizes on Geneva Lake during severe storm, Wisconsin

Two people are dead and one person remains missing after an airboat capsized on the Istokpoga Canal in Florida

Three children died after a recreational boat carrying 10 people capsized on Geneva Lake in southeastern Wisconsin during a sudden severe storm on Friday, July 3, 2026. Seven occupants were rescued, while the City of Lake Geneva declared a state of emergency as the storm caused widespread damage across the community.

Three children died after a boat carrying 10 people capsized on Geneva Lake in southeastern Wisconsin during a sudden severe storm on Friday, July 3. The City of Lake Geneva declared a State of Emergency because of widespread storm damage.

The privately owned motorboat was carrying six adults and four children when the weather began to deteriorate rapidly. The vessel was overwhelmed by the waves, took on water, capsized, and sank as strong winds and large waves developed.

Emergency responders rescued six adults and one child from the lake. They were then informed that three children were still missing. After an intensive search, all three children were located and recovered from the water

First responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene, and emergency medical personnel continued those efforts while transporting the children to local hospitals. Despite those efforts, all three children were pronounced dead. Authorities said all four children aboard the boat were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.

Officials said the circumstances surrounding the capsizing remain under investigation. The agency also reminded boaters to monitor weather forecasts closely, remain alert to changing conditions on the water, and head to shore immediately when severe weather approaches.

The boating tragedy occurred as a powerful storm moved through the Lake Geneva area. According to the City of Lake Geneva, severe weather struck at about 12:18 local time on Friday, causing widespread damage across the city. Numerous trees and power lines were downed, and one person suffered minor injuries after being struck by a falling tree.

Donian Park and Oak Hill Cemetery were closed until further notice because of dangerous hanging and fallen tree limbs. Flat Iron Park and Library Park were also temporarily closed while crews cleared debris and secured the affected areas.

City officials urged residents to avoid storm-damaged areas so emergency crews and utility workers could continue the cleanup safely. They also asked residents to check on neighbors, especially those who may be vulnerable, as some parts of the city remained without power.
