Dangerous heat forecast across the central and eastern United States through the July 4 weekend

A dangerous heatwave is forecast to intensify across much of the central and eastern United States starting Sunday, June 28, 2026. High temperatures up to 38°C (100°F) and heat index values reaching 38 to 43°C (100 to 110°F), locally as high as 46°C (115°F), through the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Dangerous heat is forecast to affect much of the central and eastern United States through the end of June and the Independence Day holiday weekend, with temperatures expected to intensify beginning June 28 and persist into next week.

High temperatures are forecast to reach 32 to 39°C (90s to low 100s°F) across the affected regions. Combined with high humidity, heat index values are forecast to reach 38 to 43°C (100 to 110°F), with localized peaks of up to 46°C (115°F). Overnight temperatures are forecast to fall only into the 21 to 26°C range (70s°F), providing little relief from the heat.

“These levels of heat mean health impacts become more likely in general and may occur to anyone without adequate hydration and cooling,” meteorologists at the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) warned.

Major to Extreme HeatRisk is forecast across the Mississippi and Ohio valleys through the coming week. High or Moderate HeatRisk is expected across much of the region east of the Rocky Mountains through July 4 and 5, while a broader Slight HeatRisk extends through July 7, reaching as far west as the Great Basin.

Heat index values of 38 to 43°C (100 to 110°F), together with overnight lows in the 21 to 32°C range (70s and 80s°F), are expected to limit nighttime cooling during the holiday weekend and prolong heat stress across the affected areas.
