Tourist helicopter wreckage found near Mount Aso crater after disappearance, Japan

A sightseeing helicopter carrying two Taiwanese tourists and a Japanese pilot was found wrecked near the crater of Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on January 20, 2026, after disappearing during a short flight earlier the same day. Rescue operations have been severely hampered by dense volcanic gas emissions and poor visibility around the active crater.

A sightseeing helicopter that went missing during a routine flight near Mount Aso was located close to the volcano’s crater on January 20, 2026, Japanese authorities confirmed. The aircraft was carrying three people: a 64-year-old Japanese pilot and two Taiwanese tourists, a 41-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman.

The helicopter departed from the Aso Cuddly Dominion tourist facility in Aso City at approximately 10:52 local time (LT) on January 20 for a short aerial tour over the volcanic area. Contact with the aircraft was lost around 11:00 LT as it flew near the summit region. At approximately 11:04 LT, emergency services received an automated alert from a mobile phone believed to belong to one of the passengers, indicating a possible impact.

Local police, firefighters, and aerial units launched an immediate search operation. Later the same day, search aircraft identified wreckage near the crater, and officials confirmed it belonged to the missing helicopter after verifying identifying details.

Rescue operations have been complicated by persistent volcanic activity at the Nakadake crater, including the release of dense gas and steam, as well as thick fog that has significantly reduced visibility. Authorities said ground access to the site remains extremely dangerous due to the risk of toxic gases and unstable terrain.

Units from the Japan Self-Defense Forces were deployed to assist with aerial searches, while local emergency services established a command post to monitor conditions and plan further operations.

As of the latest update, officials have not been able to safely reach the wreckage, and the condition of those on board has not been confirmed.

Mount Aso, located in Kumamoto Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes and features a large caldera with several craters. The volcano last experienced a significant eruption in 2021, but continuous degassing means hazardous conditions can persist near the summit even during periods of relative calm.

Authorities said rescue or recovery efforts will continue once volcanic gas levels decrease and weather conditions improve. Coordination with Taiwanese representatives remains ongoing as search operations continue.
