The body of a 41-year-old man from Denver, Colorado, was discovered floating in Yellowstone Lake on the morning of June 8 near Rock Point on the lake’s northwest shore near Bridge Bay, according to the National Park Service.

Occupants of a vessel spotted the body and notified authorities. National Park Service rangers responded to the scene and recovered the body, along with a capsized kayak and personal belongings.

The National Park Service said no further details were available.

Yellowstone Lake is one of the park’s largest and most hazardous boating areas, with a surface area of 341.1 km² (131.7 square miles), 227 km (141 miles) of shoreline, and an elevation of 2 357 m (7 733 feet).

The National Park Service warns that park lakes remain extremely cold in June, generally around 4–9°C (40s°F), while sudden strong winds can produce waves of 0.9–1.5 m (3–5 feet), making open-water crossings dangerous.
