At least five people were injured after strong winds struck Kendrick Family Ballpark in Granville, West Virginia, on June 6. The injuries reportedly occurred when a tent collapsed on Randy’s Ridge during the Super Regional baseball game between the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Cal Poly Mustangs.
While the West Virginia University Police Department confirmed five injuries, some local media outlets reported up to seven injuries resulting from the incident. Strong winds of up to 64 km/h (40 mph) swept across the area when the tent collapsed.
“I was just trying to hold my weight on the pole with the cement block, and then it started sliding. Another guy joined in and tried to hold another pole, and then a big gust of wind came,” Mountaineer fan Keith Hill told WAJR. Hill was on top of the ridge when the severe weather struck.
“It just started sliding really hard, and people got caught up in the ropes and the poles.”
According to multiple witnesses at the scene, the storm destroyed a West Virginia University Athletic Club tent set up at the top of Randy’s Ridge within seconds of reaching the area at approximately 15:45 LT.
In less than 60 seconds, fans on the ridge reported grabbing onto anything that might become airborne, with several people sustaining injuries while attempting to prevent the large tent from potentially injuring hundreds of spectators.

The tent, which spanned more than 9 m (30 feet), rolled downhill to a point roughly halfway between the first and second seating areas before it was secured by WVU officials and emergency responders. Officers from the Granville Police Department, the West Virginia University Police Department, and the Westover Police Department were among those who responded.
Fans who were medically cleared following the incident remained at the ballpark to support the Mountaineers, who defeated Cal Poly 17-1 and advanced to Omaha.
