Chinese authorities have detained mine officials and launched an investigation after a gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province, killed 82 people, the deadliest coal mine disaster in China since 2009.
The explosion struck at 19:29 local time (11:29 UTC) on May 22, with 247 workers underground, according to Chinese state media. Authorities said 2 people remained missing and 128 others were hospitalized as of late May 23.
Earlier media reports of 90 deaths turned out to be incorrect because worker counts supplied during rescue operations were inaccurate. The revised toll of 82 dead is the latest confirmed official figure.
Associated Press reported that local officials alleged “serious illegal violations” at the mine, including discrepancies between the reported and actual underground layout that may have complicated rescue work. Authorities had not publicly released formal findings as of May 24.
China’s State Council dispatched an investigation team to Shanxi and said accountability would be pursued rigorously. AP reported that authorities had ordered broader coal-sector inspections covering ventilation systems, gas drainage, underground monitoring systems, and mine layouts.
The accident is China’s deadliest coal mine disaster since the 2009 Xinxing mine explosion in Heilongjiang Province, which killed 108 people.
Shanxi is China’s largest coal-producing province and remains central to the country’s energy sector. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
