Explosion at shop kills two and injures 13 in Benxi, Liaoning, China

An explosion at a street-side shop in Benxi, Liaoning Province, China, killed two people and injured 13 others at 06:42 LT on June 5, 2026, according to the Benxi Fire and Rescue Bureau.

At 06:42 LT on June 5, 2026, an explosion at a street-side shop on Pingshan Road in Pingshan District, Benxi, Liaoning Province, killed two people and injured 13 others, according to the Benxi Fire and Rescue Bureau.

The bureau said the explosion occurred at a shop measuring approximately 35 m (377 feet2). Preliminary information released by authorities identified a suspected liquefied gas cylinder leak as the cause of the blast. The cause has not been formally determined and remains under investigation.

The Benxi Fire and Rescue Bureau dispatched 42 firefighters and rescue personnel, along with eight fire engines, after receiving the emergency call. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and extinguished a small fire that resulted from the explosion.

Rescue personnel recovered two trapped individuals, who were later confirmed dead. Thirteen people sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the suspected liquefied gas cylinder leak and explosion, and authorities have not released additional information regarding the investigation.
