Winter Storm Liam grounds 1 200 flights, delays 6 600 across US

A potent winter storm that swept through Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, forced cancelations of more than 1 230 flights and delayed more than 6 000 flights across the United States. More than 600 flights are already canceled for Friday, February 9 ahead of another winter storm.

In total, 1 239 flights were canceled nationwide and 6 628 delayed, according to FlightAware. Most of them happened at four Northeastern airports with the worst affected Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey with 137 cancelations and 179 delays, followed by Boston Logan International Airport, New England with 128 cancelations and 128 delays.

There was one reported incident – a Southwest Airlines aircraft that slid sideways on a taxiway at Baltimore/Washington International Airport as it was getting ready for departure with 149 people on board. According to the airport, no one was hurt and the all passengers were safely transported back to the terminal.

A similar situation was in neighboring Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, including some of the nation's busiest airports like Toronto Pearson with 98 flights canceled and 363 delayed and Montreal Trudeau with 46 canceled and 114 delayed.

A total of 615 flights have already been canceled for Friday ahead of another winter storm, named Mateo by The Weather Channel. The worst affected are Chicago Midway with 150 and Chicago O'Hare with 143 flights already canceled.

This winter storm is expected to produce a swath of moderate to heavy snow from Montana to New England.
