Mount Washington on the pace to one of the top 5 snowiest Junes on record
Although the summer is the northern hemisphere is nearly here, wintry conditions have once again made a return to the summit of Mount Washington, with snow and hurricane-force winds.
Officials at the Mount Washington Observatory said they are on the pace to have one of the top five snowiest Junes on record dating back to 1932, after the top of the mountain received more than 76.2 mm (3 inches) of fresh snow on Sunday, June 12, 2016.
Sunday's snow added up to 63.5 mm (2.5 inches) received earlier in the month, bringing the total snow cover, as of June 12, to 139.7 mm (5.5 inches). The record snowfall in June is 203.2 mm (8 inches).
The Observatory added that although they are seeing wintry conditions right now, the more summer-like weather is right around the corner.
At 12:54 UTC on June 13 (08:54 EDT), the temperature at the mountain's summit was 0.7 °C (33.3 °F). The wind was blowing at a speed of 102.9 km/h (64 mph) and the relative humidity was 99%. You can check the current weather conditions at the Observatory's website.
Mount Washington, called Agiocochook by some Native American tribes, is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 1 917 m (6 288 feet) and the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River.
The mountain is notorious for its erratic weather. On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Observatory recorded a wind speed of 372 km/h (231 mph) at the summit, the world record for most of the 20th century, and still a record for measured wind speeds not involved with a tropical cyclone.
