Two fatalities reported as heavy rainfall and river flooding impact Wide Bay–Burnett region, Australia
Two tourists were found dead inside a submerged vehicle near Kilkivan in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of southeast Queensland, Australia, on March 12, 2026, after intense rainfall between March 9 and March 10 triggered flash flooding across parts of the region.
Queensland Police confirmed on March 12 that two tourists were found dead after their vehicle was discovered submerged in floodwaters near Kilkivan in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of southeast Queensland during a flooding emergency affecting the area.
Police located the bodies inside the vehicle during search operations after the pair were reported missing when they failed to reach their destination earlier in the week. Media reports identified the victims as Chinese backpackers aged 26 and 23 who were travelling through the region.
The incident occurred on a rural road near Kilkivan in the Wide Bay–Burnett district following intense rainfall that triggered flash flooding across parts of southeast Queensland between March 9 and March 10. Emergency services began search operations after the vehicle was reported missing during the flood event.
Heavy rainfall associated with the same weather system produced widespread totals of approximately 80 to 150 mm (3.15 to 5.91 inches) across the region in the 24 hours to 09:00 local time on March 10, with localized higher totals recorded at several observation sites.
The Bureau of Meteorology reported about 260 mm (10.24 inches) at Brovinia and approximately 184 mm (7.24 inches) at Gympie during the same observation period.
Local media described the event as the worst flooding the area has seen in more than a decade.
The rainfall generated rapid runoff across multiple catchments in the Wide Bay–Burnett district, causing river levels to rise and flood low-lying areas. Flood warnings were issued for several river systems in the region, including the Burnett River and the Mary River, as authorities monitored water levels and catchment responses.
Road inundation was reported on rural roads in parts of the district as floodwaters spread across low-lying crossings and causeways. Flooding in these areas can develop rapidly during intense rainfall events because small catchments and drainage channels respond quickly to short-duration rainfall bursts.
The fatalities occurred while flood warnings remained active across parts of southeast Queensland, where authorities continued monitoring river conditions and rainfall forecasts as the weather system affecting the region progressed.
