Northern NSW has been hit by “giant” hailstones up to 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter, inflicting damage and necessitating emergency measures.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 28, with reports starting around 14:20 UTC.

Simultaneously, Darwin in the Northern Territory has seen 14 days this month with temperatures above 35°C (95°F), including a record-breaking 35.4°C (95.72°F) on Monday, October 28, indicating an extreme heatwave.

The severe hail affected the Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands districts in NSW, including Maclean and Gulmarrad. At the same time, the extreme heat impacted Darwin and surrounding areas in the Northern Territory.

The hail storm in New South Wales arose when warm, wet surface conditions combined with an upper trough, generating a storm environment conducive to giant hail formation.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) monitors these conditions closely, issuing advisories to protect the public and property.
