Rare tornado injures six and damages infrastructure in Thoothukudi district, India

A tornado forms amid dark clouds, in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, Sunday, June 21, 2026

A rare tornado damaged structures and injured six people near Vaagaikulam in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district on June 21, 2026, after severe thunderstorms tore roofing sheets from a mini theme park and sent debris into nearby power infrastructure.

A rare rotating vortex damaged structures and injured six people near Vaagaikulam in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district on June 21, after severe thunderstorms tore roofing sheets from a mini theme park and sent debris into nearby power infrastructure.

The injured visitors, who were bathing beneath artificial waterfalls when the structure failed, suffered fractures and were admitted to Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital.

Videos of the vortex circulated widely on social media, prompting tornado reports, although subsequent meteorological assessments described the phenomenon as a localized convective vortex rather than a confirmed tornado.

The event developed around 17:00 LT after intense heat earlier in the day gave way to thunderstorms and strong winds along the Vaagaikulam–Pudukottai corridor, an area that includes Thoothukudi Airport. Witness videos showed a rotating column extending beneath a thunderstorm cloud base as heavy rain and gusty winds swept across the area.

The most serious injuries occurred at a mini theme park near the Vaagaikulam toll plaza, where strong winds ripped sections of roofing from structures within the facility. Pieces of torn metal sheeting were carried through the air and fell into an artificial waterfall area where visitors were bathing. Six people sustained fractures and were transported to Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Damage was also reported at the Vaagaikulam toll plaza on the Thoothukudi–Palayamkottai four-lane highway. Roofing sheets displaced by the winds struck high-tension electric cables, disrupting power supply in the immediate area. Local reporting indicated that the most intense phase of the storm and vortex persisted for approximately 30 minutes before weakening.

The unusual appearance of the rotating column led to widespread public speculation that a tornado had struck the district. Images and videos circulated rapidly online, with many social-media users describing the phenomenon as a tornado, a weather event rarely reported in Tamil Nadu.

Subsequent meteorological assessments cited in later reporting attributed the feature to a localized convective vortex or transient funnel cloud associated with vigorous thunderstorm updrafts beneath cumulonimbus clouds.

Because no authoritative survey findings have been located, tornado classification remains unconfirmed. Based on currently available information, the event is more accurately described as a localized convective vortex associated with severe thunderstorm activity.

Although uncommon, severe thunderstorms can generate funnel clouds, rotating vortices, damaging straight-line winds, and localized wind-related damage. The June 21 event illustrates how short-lived convective phenomena can create hazardous conditions for people in exposed outdoor locations even when impacts remain geographically limited.
