Two women reported dead after tornado touchdown in Mount Vernon, Illinois

At least two women were reported dead after a tornado touched down in Mount Vernon in northeastern Jefferson County on June 21, 2026.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) confirmed two fatalities after a tornado touched down in the northeastern part of the county, a little after 17:00 local time (LT) on June 21.

The twister destroyed at least three homes, with fatalities being reported in two of them in the Mount Vernon area. The first was of an 83-year-old woman in Ranch Lane, while another was of a 62-year-old woman in July Road.

“Persons were killed as a direct result of the storm in two of the destroyed residences, one in each, both single-wide trailers,” JCSO said.

Five people were hospitalized for life-threatening injuries, while downed trees blocked three roads.

“Power lines were reported down at multiple locations, but power has been restored to most locations. People who do not have emergency business in the northeast section of Jefferson County should avoid this area,” JCSO said.

The tornado was part of a larger outbreak that spawned dozens of tornadoes across the U.S. Midwest. A tornado damaged the Park Place Apartments retirement community in Newburgh, Indiana.

Multiple tornado warnings were issued across Illinois and Indiana, including Warrick, Pike, Gibson, Jefferson, Marion, Fayette, Crawford, and Clay Counties.
