Tropical Storm “Trami” made landfall in Central Vietnam’s Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang regions on Sunday with winds of up to 88 km/h (55 mph), triggering heavy rain and flooding across the region.

This was the sixth storm to hit Vietnam this year, claiming at least three lives and leaving one person missing.

As of Monday afternoon, October 28, more than 28 340 homes in Quang Binh Province were flooded, including around 15 800 homes in Le Thuy District, 11 540 in Quang Ninh District, and about 1 000 homes in Dong Hoi City that were inundated due to the storm’s impact.

Quang Binh has been experiencing continuous rainfall since October 25, as Trami’s impact combined with a cold front moving into the region from the north. The province received between 370 and 430 mm (14.6 – 16.9 inches) of rain from 19:00 local time (LT) on Sunday to 17:00 LT on Monday.

The floods have isolated 58 villages and submerged at least 84 locations along the roadways of Quang Binh Province, including five points on National Highway 1, which connects northern and southern Vietnam. Parts of the highway were submerged in up to 60 cm (23.6 inches) of floodwaters.

At least 4 020 homes have been flooded in Quang Ninh District, where residents were relocated to higher ground using boats.

A part of the highway passing through Cam Thuy Commune in Le Thuy District was submerged by over 1 m (3.3 feet) of water, making it impassable.

An 800 m (2 624.7 feet) stretch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway has been submerged by the floods, with the deepest point reaching 80 cm (31.5 inches) underwater.

Floodwaters in Le Thuy District’s Kien Giang River have risen to rooftop levels, inundating Loc Thuy and An Thuy communes. More than 15 800 homes in the district have been submerged by the floodwaters.

As of 16:00 LT on Monday, water levels at the Kien Giang River had reached 10.92 m (35.8 feet). Meanwhile, water levels at Le Thuy Station had reached 3.98 m (13.1 feet). High tide at the mouth of the Nhat Le River has prevented floodwaters from draining into the sea, further exacerbating the flooding.

Schools in the district were closed after some, such as Lien Thuy Primary School, were inundated by over 50 cm (19.7 inches) of floodwaters.

Boats were being used to navigate parts of the flooded district, with rescue operatives deployed to assist with relocating residents from several high-risk areas, including Van Thuy, Thai Thuy, and low-lying communes of Phong Thuy, An Thuy, Loc Thuy, and Phu Tho.

According to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, heavy rainfall was recorded from southern Ha Tinh to Thua Thien Hue, including Quang Binh, with amounts ranging from 100 to 150 mm (3.9 – 5.9 inches), and reaching up to 200 mm (7.9 inches) in some areas from Monday night to early Tuesday, October 29.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected in the region from Ha Tinh to Da Nang on Tuesday, with forecasted rainfall between 50 and 100 mm (2 – 3.9 inches), and over 200 mm (7.9 inches) in certain locations.

For Wednesday, October 30, the forecast indicates moderate to heavy rain from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai, with some areas experiencing very heavy rainfall. Expected rainfall ranges from 30 to 60 mm (1.2 – 2.4 inches), with some places seeing more than 120 mm (4.7 inches).
