Torrential rains that began around October 25 caused severe flooding across central Vietnam, with the provinces of Thừa Thiên Huế, Quảng Nam, Quảng Trị, and Đà Nẵng City among the most affected. According to the Vietnamese government, at least nine people have died and five are missing as of October 30.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) reported that accumulated rainfall exceeded 1 000 mm (39 inches) in some areas, marking one of the heaviest rain events recorded in recent years. In Huế City, streets and low-lying neighborhoods were submerged, with floodwaters reaching 1–2 m (3–6 feet) in depth.
Local reports indicate that more than 100 000 homes were affected by flooding, primarily in Thừa Thiên Huế and Quảng Nam provinces. Roads, rail lines, and bridges sustained damage, and landslides were reported in several mountainous districts.
Water levels on major rivers such as the Hương and Vu Gia remained above alert thresholds on October 30, prompting continued warnings for residents in downstream areas.
Emergency teams, including military units, were deployed to assist in evacuations and deliver relief supplies.
The heavy rains were associated with an active northeast monsoon interacting with a low-pressure trough over the South China Sea. The weather forecast calls for a gradual decrease after October 31, but authorities urge caution as saturated soil increases the risk of additional landslides.
