M6.0 earthquake hits Vanuatu at intermediate depth

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit near the coast of Vanuatu at 15:51 UTC on August 24, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 114.7 km (71.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.0 at a depth of 123 km (76.4 miles).

The epicenter was located 63.8 km (39.6 miles) SW of Sola (population 1 171), 132.8 km (82.5 miles) N of Luganville (population 13 397) and 397.2 km (246.8 miles) NNW of Port-Vila (population 35 901), Vanuatu.

There are about 19 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

There are no tsunami warnings, watches or advisories in effect.
