Strong M6.4 earthquake hits Vanuatu region
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 hit Vanuatu region at 21:47 UTC on September 8, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 494 km (307 miles) ESE of Isangel, Vanuatu and 522 km (324 miles) SW of Nadi, Fiji.
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, NWS PTWC said.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
There are likely to be no affected structures in this region.
