Blizzard 2016 claims at least 30 lives across the US East Coast

Although the massive Winter Storm "Jonas", that was battering the US East Coast since January 23, 2016, is now over, its effects are still felt. Some areas are still buried under large amounts of snow, and residents are unable to leave their homes. At least 30 people have been reported dead so far.
Central Park, New York City, reported 68 cm (26.8 inches) of snowfall, which is the second highest snow total since 1869. The first snowfall total record is still narrowly held by the 68.3 cm (26.9 inches), measured in February 2006.

Areas of Washington received over 76.2 cm (30 inches) while 101.6 cm (40 inches) was reported in a rural area near Harpers Ferry in West Virginia. Even North Florida was affected by the snowstorm.
"This is kind of a top-10 snowstorm," said weather service winter storm expert Paul Kocin.

In total, the storm affected more than 60 million people, and 11 US states have declared a state of emergency. Over 250 000 have been left without power supplies, and more than 12 000 flights were cancelled since January 22. Traffic was heavily disrupted across the affected regions, and the storm has stranded numerous vehicles.
