Shallow M6.5 earthquake, series of strong aftershocks hit Kermadec Islands region

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.5 hit the Kermadec Islands region at 02:46 UTC on January 29, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.4 at the same depth.
The epicenter was located about 117 km (93 miles) E of Raoul Island and 945 km (587 miles) S of Nuku'alofa, Tonga.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
At least 7 aftershocks with magnitudes above 5 were registered over the next 5 hours.
