Shallow M6.3 earthquake hits Kermadec Islands region, New Zealand

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit the Kermadec Islands region at 02:52 UTC on August 31, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 16 km (10 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.3 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The epicenter was located 984 km (611 miles) SSW of 'Ohonua, Tonga and 1 008 km (627 miles) NE of Whangarei, New Zealand.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said.
