Storm Amy, the first named storm of the 2025–26 European windstorm season, is set to impact Ireland and the UK on October 3, bringing hurricane-force winds and major coastal hazards. National meteorological agencies of both countries have issued high-level warnings ahead of the storm, which is currently undergoing rapid deepening in the North Atlantic.
Met Éireann has issued a Status Red marine warning from 14:00 to 20:00 LT on Friday, October 3, covering the west and north coasts from Loop Head to Rossan Point to Fair Head. Forecasts indicate southwest to west winds reaching violent storm force 11. Such conditions present extreme hazards for marine operations and coastal infrastructure.
The UK Met Office has placed parts of the country under an Amber warning for strong winds. Gusts exceeding 120 km/h (75 mph) are likely in exposed coastal areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland, with disruption to transport, power lines, and structures expected. Offshore gusts may reach 150 km/h (93 mph), enhanced by sting jet dynamics within the storm system.
“Storm Amy is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Scotland, and we expect to see disruption to the transport network in the warning areas,” said Martin Thomson from Transport Scotland.
“The rain and wind will bring difficult driving conditions, such as reduced visibility and surface water, and are also likely to affect the ferry and rail networks, so it’s important to plan your journey ahead of time.”
“Motorists should use the Traffic Scotland website before they set off to make sure that their route is available, and you should check with your operator if you are planning to travel on trains, ferries and flights.”
Storm Amy is undergoing explosive cyclogenesis, with central pressure forecast to fall near 950 hPa. The system originates from the interaction of tropical remnants and a strong upper trough, creating a powerful pressure gradient. The sting jet and split front structure are expected to bring damaging winds across a broad swath of northwestern Europe.
While Amy’s strongest winds target northwestern Europe, a separate upper trough is steering moist unstable air into southeastern Europe.

The European Storm Forecast Experiment (ESTOFEX) has issued a level 2 warning for eastern and southeastern Bulgaria, highlighting excessive rainfall and flash flood risk. Forecasts indicate 36-hour rainfall totals of 200–350 mm (7.9–13.8 inches), increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides in areas already saturated by heavy rainfall the previous night.
Training convection and V-shaped storm clusters may also produce hail, severe gusts, and one or two tornadoes along coastal regions.
Surrounding regions, including Romania and other parts of Bulgaria, are under a level 1 warning for heavy rain with isolated tornadoes.
Southwestern Turkey is under a level 1 warning for heavy rain and a coastal tornado threat. Additional waterspouts are forecast over the Aegean and Ionian seas, with isolated heavy rain expected in southwestern Greece, but no upgrade was issued for those areas.
