The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued heat advisories for several counties in southern California for a short-duration heatwave expected on Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10. Areas under advisory include Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. Additional advisories are in place for parts of central California, including the southern Salinas Valley and Lake San Antonio.
The advisories will be in effect from 10:00 PDT on Friday to 21:00 PDT on Saturday. While coastal temperatures are expected to range from 21 to 27°C (70 to 80°F), inland valleys and interior regions could experience highs between 32 and 41°C (90 to 106°F).
Temperatures in some areas are forecast to be 4 to 9°C (7 to 16°F) above average. Woodland Hills could reach up to 37°C (99°F), while Burbank is expected to hit 35.5°C (96°F) on Saturday.
Meanwhile, coastal areas such as Torrance and Santa Monica are expected to remain cooler, with temperatures around 24°C (75°F) during the advisory period.

The first level 3 (major) HeatRisk of the year has been issued for parts of the Inland Empire and low deserts on Saturday. A level 2 (moderate) HeatRisk is in place for the inland valleys and desert areas. People without access to effective cooling and adequate hydration face an elevated risk of heat-related illness.

According to the NWS, heat-related illnesses could affect vulnerable groups, including children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions. These populations are advised to take extra precautions and avoid sun exposure during the advisory period.
