Storm Conall rapidly intensifies as it moves toward the Netherlands
Storm Conall, the third named storm of the season, is bringing heavy rainfall and widespread flooding to the southern UK, with 90 flood warnings issued as of Wednesday morning, November 27, 2024, including severe “danger to life” notices in Northamptonshire and Wales. The Netherlands is expected to experience the brunt of the storm’s impact, while strong winds are forecasted over eastern England as the storm develops over the North Sea through Wednesday.

The third storm of the 2024/25 European storm season, Storm Conall, was named on Tuesday, November 26 by the Dutch Weather Service Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut (KNMI). The system brought rainfall across the southern UK, as it moved eastward and started rapidly deepening over the North Sea late Wednesday, November 27.
Several Yellow warnings for rainfall were issued across the southern UK from Tuesday through Wednesday. By Wednesday morning, 90 flood warnings had been issued in England, including a severe “danger to life” notice for the River Nene in Northamptonshire and one in Wales.
The Isle of Wight recorded the heaviest rainfall, with 43.3 mm (1.7 inches) measured between 22:00 local time (LT) on Tuesday and 10:00 LT on Wednesday.
Train services were canceled in several areas, and vehicles were abandoned due to flooding. The storm brought heavy rainfall to the region shortly after Storm Bert impacted the country over the weekend. Dartmoor experienced 50 mm (2 inches) of rain on Tuesday night, while 20 – 30 mm (0.8 – 1.2 inches) of rain fell across southern England.
Emsworth, in Hampshire, recorded water levels in the West Brook area as “high and rising rapidly.” Heavy rainfall in the area is expected to reach nearly 40 mm (1.6 inches).
Several regions across the UK have been flooded, prompting authorities to urge citizens to implement flood protection measures until Thursday morning, November 29.
A total of 160 flood alerts, indicating possible flooding, are in place in England, along with three in Wales.
The Netherlands is expected to experience the brunt of the storm’s impact, while strong winds are forecasted over eastern England as the storm develops over the North Sea through Wednesday. Flooding is anticipated along the River Severn, from Shropshire to Gloucestershire, and the Bristol Avon.
Several Orange alerts have been issued across the Netherlands by KNMI through Wednesday due to the storm. Very heavy winds are expected in the northern regions as the storm moves from the west to the northeast of the Netherlands.
