Red Warning for Extreme Heat issued for record third consecutive day, UK
The UK Met Office has issued a Red Warning for Extreme Heat for Friday, June 26, 2026, marking the first time in the history of the current weather warnings system that red warnings have been issued for extreme heat for three consecutive days.

Today’s Red Warning for Extreme Heat covers East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, South West England, Wales, and West Midlands. Temperatures in the shade are expected to exceed 37°C (98.6°F), and up to 40°C (104°F) in some places.
Red Warning for Extreme Heat on Friday, June 26, covers East of England, London, and South East England, marking the third consecutive day of red extreme-heat warnings under the current UK weather-warning system. Maximum temperatures in the shaded area could exceed 36°C (97°F), perhaps rising to 38°C (100°F) in some places.
The heat will be accompanied by high humidity, exacerbating the potential for discomfort and health impacts, with very warm and humid night times also reducing the ability for people to recover overnight.
Significant disruption to daily life is likely, and the public should take every effort to make precautions and adapt their daily routines where possible to cope with these levels of heat, which, up to now, have been extremely rare for the country, UK Met Office meteorologists said.
“This exceptional spell of hot and humid weather will maintain its grip on the UK for a little longer,” Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said. “Although the current red warning for areas in more central and western parts of England and Wales will expire later today, the heatwave will still be bringing high temperatures to these areas, albeit moving away from the peak heat of Wednesday and Thursday.”
On June 24, the UK Met Office reported a provisional UK June daily maximum temperature record of 36.1°C (97.0°F) at Gosport, Hampshire. If confirmed through the verification process, the figure would exceed the previous June record of 35.6°C (96.1°F), reached on June 28, 1976, and June 29, 1957.
