Coastal storm causes sixth house collapse of the year in Rodanthe Village, North Carolina

A coastal storm struck North Carolina from the night of Thursday, November 14, 2024, into Friday, November 15, resulting in a house collapse in Rodanthe Village. Flooding caused by the storm led to the closure of a state highway, and debris forced the closure of a beach in the village.

A coastal storm struck North Carolina on Thursday night going into Friday, causing a home in the village of Rodanthe in Dare County to collapse into the ocean near Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks. This marked the sixth house collapse in the area this year.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the collapse, and no injuries were reported.

The beach in Rodanthe Village was closed after the collapse, leaving hazardous debris. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore urged visitors to avoid the beach and ocean for several miles south of Rodanthe, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

Cleanup efforts have been limited due to severe weather conditions. A section of State Highway 12, connecting Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe, was also closed due to flooding.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is monitoring unoccupied structures at risk of collapse on G.A. Kohler Court and Sea Oats Drive.

According to the NPS, the following home collapses have been reported in Rodanthe Village this year:

  • One unoccupied house on May 28
  • One unoccupied house on August 16
  • Two unoccupied houses on September 20
  • One unoccupied house on September 24
  • One unoccupied overnight from November 14 going into November 15
