China’s Ministry of Water Resources issued a Level 4 flood warning for Hainan province on Wednesday. The outer rain belt of Tropical Storm “Trami” (known in the Philippines as Kristine) brought over 700 mm (27.6 inches) of rain between October 26 and 29, leading to severe flooding across the region. China has a four-tier emergency response system, with Level I indicating the highest severity.
Several areas of Hainan were waterlogged on Tuesday, October 29, following torrential rains triggered by Trami. Southern Hainan Island received 540.5 mm (21.27 inches) of rainfall in Just 24 hours on Monday, October 28, leading to severe floods in Wanning and Sanya.
The city of Sanya recorded 294.9 mm (11.6 inches) of rainfall in 24 hours on Monday, October 28, marking the highest daily rainfall in October since 2000.

Ding’an region in the Hainan province also recorded heavy rainfall recording around 400 mm (15.74 inches) of rainfall in 24 hours on Tuesday.
Although Trami did not directly impact China, authorities evacuated approximately 50 000 people and recalled fishing vessels as a precaution.
Most areas of Hainan province will continue to receive heavy rainfall through Wednesday, October 30, with a high risk of flash floods. The Wanquan River may exceed warning levels and face flooding.
