Shallow M6.1 earthquake hits South Indian Ocean

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit the South Indian Ocean at 07:00 UTC on November 14, 2023. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 13 km (8 miles).
The epicenter was located 1 262 km (788 miles) SW of Sinabang, Indonesia, and 1 318 km (819 miles) SSE of Tangalle, Sri Lanka.
There are no tsunami warnings in effect.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
There are likely to be no affected structures in this region.
