A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.7 hit south of Africa at 04:55 UTC on July 10, 2024. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 2 100 km (1 305 miles) SSE of Arniston, South Africa.

There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.

“Based on pre-run model scenarios, there is no threat to countries in the Indian Ocean. No further bulletins will be issued unless the situation changes,” the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) said.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

There are likely to be no affected structures in this region.
