The epicenter was located deep within the South Atlantic Ocean basin, 2 233 km (1 387 miles) SSW of Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa.
There is no tsunami threat associated with this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
