Strong and shallow M6.6 earthquake east of South Sandwich Islands, SW Atlantic Ocean

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.6 hit east of South Sandwich Islands, SW Atlantic Ocean at 01:16 UTC on April 3, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 2 330 km (1 450 miles) S of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena, and 3 260 km (2 030 miles) SW of Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa.

There are no people living within 100 km (6.2 miles).

Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, NWS PTWC said.
