The number of people killed in floods, landslides and other weather-related incidents since the start of this year's monsoon season in India has reached 1 058.

According to the latest report of the National Emergency Response Centre (NDMI), the death toll following monsoon flooding has reached 1 058 across 9 states, DG ECHO reports.

245 people have died in Maharashtra, 155 in Kerala, 154 in West Bengal, 130 in Bihar, 107 in Gujarat, 94 in Assam, 94 in Karnataka, 69 in Madhya Pradesh, and 10 in Odisha.

According to the same source, the number of displaced has reached more than 1 830 000 people.

Heavy to locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over central, eastern and southern states over the next 24 hours, accompanied by thunderstorms in Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha.

  1. I am afraid both floods and heatwaves will become increase, they’ll be more important and more dangerous (according to the IPCC 1,5°C report 2018). Larger areas will be flooded. Floodsafe zones or constructions should be defined. Maybe a system of huge evacuation channels and water reservoir should be created for 500 m rains.
