A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.8 hit Tarauaca, State of Acre, Brazil at 19:25 UTC on January 5, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 575.3 km (357 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.8 at a depth of 586 km (364 miles).
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 89.1 km (55.3 miles) W of Tarauaca (population 16 526) and 134.3 km (83.5 miles) W of Feijo (population 12 951), Brazil.
There are about 47 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Some 6 503 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are mud wall and informal (metal, timber, GI etc.) construction.
