Bright green fireball reported over Buenos Aires and Río de la Plata region

Witnesses across Buenos Aires city, its suburbs, and areas of Uruguay reported seeing a very bright meteor with several recordings showing a green-colored emission during its passage.

The shape and trail visible in witness videos are consistent with a high-altitude atmospheric entry event, commonly referred to as a fireball (bolide) — a term used for exceptionally bright meteors formed when space material enters Earth’s atmosphere at high velocity. The intense light results from rapid heating caused by atmospheric friction, which can produce visible fragmentation during flight.

Fireballs of this type occur regularly worldwide, though visibility over densely populated areas increases the number of reports. In April, such events typically arise from sporadic meteoroids rather than major meteor showers.

No astronomical network or space agency has issued a confirmed trajectory, energy estimate, or classification for the object.

Witnesses are encouraged to submit reports to the American Meteor Society (AMS), which collects observational data used to analyze fireball events and reconstruct trajectories.
