Tropical Cyclone “Lola” formed on October 21, 2023, as the first named storm of the 2023/24 South Pacific cyclone season. It formed 10 days before the official start of the season. The cyclone is intensifying as it moves south toward Vanuatu.
Hurricane “Norma” made landfall in Baja California Sur at 20:15 UTC on October 21, 2023, with winds of 130 km/h (80 mph), later weakening into a tropical depression near Culiacan. The storm led to the evacuation of around 200 people in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz.
The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Tej” has slightly weakened but still poses a significant threat to the coasts of Yemen and Oman. Tej is expected to make landfall near Al Ghaidah, Yemen, between 18:00 and 21:00 UTC today, bringing extremely heavy rains, wind speeds of 125 – 135 km/h (77.6 – 83.9 mph), gusting to 150 km/h (93.2 mph), and significant storm surge.
Tropical Cyclone “Tej” is heading toward the Yemen – Oman border region, where landfall is expected late October 24 or early October 25, 2023. Tej is the 3rd named storm of the 2023 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.
Tammy intensified into a hurricane at 14:00 UTC on Friday, October 20, 2023, some 150 km (90 miles) NE of Barbados and 275 km (170 miles) ESE of Martinique.
Tropical Storm “Tammy” is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by October 21, 2023, as it moves towards the Leeward Islands. Heavy rains, wind, and potential flooding are expected to begin today, affecting several Caribbean islands.
Hurricane “Norma” is expected to approach the southern portion of Baja California Sur tonight, causing severe weather conditions including heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
Category 4 Hurricane “Lidia” made landfall along the coast of west-central Mexico near Las Penitas in the state of Jalisco around 23:50 UTC on October 10, 2023, with maximum winds estimated to be near 220 km/h (140 mph).
Tropical Storm “Max” formed at 03:00 UTC on October 9, 2023, and made landfall 15 hours later just west of Puerto Vicente Guerrero, Mexico, with winds of 105 km/h (65 mph). Originating south of Central America, the storm intensified rapidly, bringing with it a threat of heavy rainfall and potential mudslides. Max is closely followed by Lidia, currently an intensifying tropical storm, which is expected to make landfall over west-central Mexico as a hurricane.
Over the next couple of days, the focus of impactful weather in the United States will shift into the northeastern region where a deepening upper-level trough is forecast to interact with the circulation associated with Tropical Storm “Philippe” currently moving northward across the western Atlantic toward Bermuda.
