Severe Tropical Storm Jangmi made landfall over southern Wakayama at approximately 04:30 JST on June 3 (19:30 UTC on June 2). It then passed near the coast of Tokyo, battering Japan with heavy rainfall and fierce winds, which caused multiple injuries, widespread damage, and left thousands without power.

A Level 5 Special Flood Warning was issued for the Koza River in the Koza River system, Wakayama Prefecture, for the first time since the new five-level system was introduced in May 2026. The system covers four types of disasters: river flooding, heavy rain, landslides, and storm surges.

“Especially in areas expected to be inundated, it is extremely likely that some form of disaster has already occurred. This corresponds to Alert Level 5, the highest warning level. There is an imminent danger to life, and people must take immediate action to ensure their safety,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The highest level of warning for the Koza River was downgraded to a Level 2 advisory at 8:50 JST. Some sections of roads along the river were flooded, but no casualties were confirmed, according to the Wakayama prefectural government and other entities.

Level 4 urgent warnings were also issued for some rivers in Kanto and Tokai, including the Kanda River and Meguro River, which run through central Tokyo.

At least 23 people were injured in seven prefectures, of whom one person in Okinawa sustained serious injuries. At least 57 homes were damaged in four prefectures, according to the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA).

Over 60 000 people were left without power due to the storm’s impact, and authorities have been receiving reports of flooding, fallen trees and debris, and landslides across a wide stretch of regions, government spokesperson Minoru Kihara said during a press briefing.

Okinawa reported the highest number of injuries, with 17 injuries, while Kagoshima reported two, and Miyazaki, Tokushima, Nara, and Aichi prefectures each reported one injury.

Kagoshima reported the most significant infrastructural damage, with 48 homes damaged. While 47 of these were partially damaged, one home was half-destroyed.

Over 400 000 people in nine prefectures were under evacuation orders. Among these, over 170 000 were from Hyogo, nearly 112 000 were from Chiba, and more than 79 000 were from Tokyo. Over 50 000 people in Shizuoka Prefecture were also under evacuation orders, along with around 800 people in Ibaraki and Mie prefectures.

About 760 domestic flights and 90 international flights were canceled on June 3. Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Skymark, and Star Flyer canceled all flights scheduled to depart from Haneda Airport before noon. As for international flights, 55 ANA flights and 37 JAL flights were canceled, NHK reported.

According to the JTWC, as of 18:00 JST (09:00 UTC) on June 3, Jangmi was located roughly 128 km (80 miles) southeast of Narita Airport and was moving east-northeast at 55.5 km/h (34.5 mph). The storm is currently weakening into an extratropical cyclone and poses no further threat to land.
