Arctic air outbreak forecast for the Deep South, marking first notable cold snap of the season, U.S.
A strong cold front will drive frigid Arctic air deep into the United States this weekend into next week, November 10, 2025 onwards, bringing December-like temperatures, widespread freezes, and the season’s first snow for some areas east of the Rockies.

A strong cold front will sweep across the central United States late this week, marking the arrival of the season’s first major cold snap, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center.
Forecast guidance shows temperatures dropping well below seasonal averages across the Midwest, South, and East, with the Climate Prediction Center extending the likelihood of below-normal conditions through at least mid-November.
The cold air will first reach the Northern Plains and upper Midwest by Friday night, November 7 and Saturday before spreading into the Plains, Tennessee Valley, and interior Northeast on Sunday.
By Monday, November 10, much of the South, including the northern Gulf Coast and parts of northern Florida, will be under the influence of the cold air mass, which will continue eastward into the Atlantic seaboard.
This shift marks a rapid end to the mild autumn pattern that has dominated much of the country in recent weeks. The cold outbreak will also bring the first snow of the season to several northern regions, beginning in the Northern Plains and Great Lakes and spreading into the Appalachians and northern New England as the front advances.

Lake-effect snow bands are expected to develop near the Great Lakes, and light accumulations are possible in parts of Michigan, northern Indiana and Ohio, western and central New York, and northern Pennsylvania. Higher elevations in New York and northern New England may see more persistent snow cover.
Strong winds in the wake of the front will enhance the chill, with brisk conditions across the Midwest, Northeast, and parts of the South.
The abrupt temperature change will follow weeks of unseasonably warm weather, prompting reminders to prepare for early-winter conditions, including protecting outdoor plumbing and vegetation from freezing.
Forecasters note that the cold pattern will not be long-lasting. Milder air is expected to return to the central United States by midweek, though cooler-than-average conditions may linger a bit longer across the Northeast as another reinforcing front arrives from Canada.
