A historic winter storm stretching over 2 415 km (1 500 miles) has blanketed the southeastern United States with heavy snow, causing the postponement of the Houston men’s basketball game and changes to the women’s game schedule.
The No. 7 Houston men’s basketball game against Utah, originally scheduled for Tuesday night, January 21, 2025, has been postponed to Wednesday, January 22 due to severe weather conditions forecast for the Houston area.
The Cougars, who are currently on a 10-game winning streak, will now play Utah at 17:00 local time (LT) on Wednesday. This postponement has also affected the Houston women’s basketball game.
The Houston women’s game against Texas Tech, initially scheduled for Wednesday night, has been rescheduled to 13:00 LT to allow for the doubleheader.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has reported that the storm will bring historic snowfall along the Gulf Coast, with snowfall rates reaching nearly 25.4 mm (1 inch) per hour or higher from eastern Texas to the western Florida Panhandle.
Snowfall totals of 76 – 152 mm (3 – 6 inches) are expected along the I-10 corridor, including cities such as New Orleans, Houston, Mobile, and Pensacola.
Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are expected to move eastward into Georgia, northern Florida, and the eastern Carolinas.
Major traffic disruptions are anticipated due to the storm, along with flight delays, road closures, and flight cancellations that are expected to persist for several days as the snow continues. Power outages are also likely because of the severe conditions.
Snowfall of 76 – 127 mm (3 – 5 inches) is forecast for much of the Houston metropolitan area. Both William P. Hobby Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston announced on Sunday night, January 19, that flight operations would be suspended on Tuesday, January 21, due to anticipated hazardous conditions.
