Weather models predict massive rainfall event over central Europe
A massive rainfall event is expected to unfold over central Europe in the next few days, caused by a slow-moving upper-low fueled by the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Weather models predict parts of the region may see extreme rainfall and potentially catastrophic flooding in the days ahead.

Central Europe is expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days due to a slow-moving upper-low system fueled by the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, which is undergoing a marine heatwave.
Sea temperatures are currently 4 – 6 °C (7.2 – 10.8 °F) warmer than average in some areas, adding more moisture to the atmosphere. This could result in increased rainfall, catastrophic flooding, and other severe weather events.
A large upper trough, predicted to start developing over Europe on September 11, 2024, is expected to bring a cold front to central Europe and the Mediterranean. This system could trigger severe flash floods and other severe weather events.
A massive rainfall event is looking increasingly likely for parts of central Europe over the next few days. The reason: a slow-moving cut off upper low fueled by anomalously warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. If anything near that verifies, catastrophic flooding is likely. pic.twitter.com/Fjc3IRTzol

Along with very heavy rains and the possibility of catastrophic flooding in parts of the region, this shift in the weather pattern is expected to bring temperatures 8 – 12 °C (14.4 – 21.6 °F) below the mid-September seasonal average across much of western and central Europe. These colder conditions may persist for several days as the upper-low gradually weakens.
Residents in the affected areas, particularly in northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Chech Republic, west Hungary, Slovakia, and southern Poland are advised to stay alert as these weather systems develop.
