A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit Easter Island region at 06:32 UTC on May 2, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 390.6 km (242.7 miles) NW of Hanga Roa, Chile (population 3 304).
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
The same region was hit by 4 more earthquakes between 00:17 and 06:49 UTC today with magnitudes ranging from M4.9 to M5.2.
