Deadly landslide buries part of Tegal Panjang village in west Java, Indonesia

A landslide triggered by heavy rain buried parts of Tegal Panjang village (Sukabumi district) in west Java, Indonesia on March 28, 2015. According to officials, 12 people were killed and 11 houses buried.
A particularly heavy downpour which lasted for 2.5 hours caused a cliff to collapse and hit the village, national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroh said today.

Sutopo said many areas in Sukabumi district are prone to landslides which cause casualties and damage to homes almost every year.
"One of the problems is increase in the population and settlements in areas which are unsupported by adequate mitigation of landslides," he said.
National disaster agency estimates around half of Indonesia's 250 million population lives in areas prone to landslides.
