San Pedro landslide – Sections of road fell into the ocean

Heavy rains two days ago caused a  274 metre section of the road near San Pedro, south of Los Angeles crumbled and fell into the Pacific Ocean, leaving a gaping hole in a cliffside.

The road had already been closed to pedestrians and vehicle traffic after cracks continued to expand over the past few months at a rate of four inches a day. Officials are asking the residents to keep their distance because the road remains unstable.

Rain exacerbated the slow-moving landslide that has left large, deepening crevices on Paseo del Mar, which runs along a coastal bluff near White Point Nature Preserve.

By Sunday, the roadway had broken into pieces that crumbled into the gaping holes, while other sections fell into the ocean below. City and county crews have for weeks been hustling to relocate sewer pipes, water lines and other infrastructure beneath the sinking roadway. (LATimes)
