Kolasib Superintendent of Police (SP) Lalrinpuia Varte reported that the landslide struck Vairengte at around 04:30 LT on September 12. Police identified the 14-year-old victim and said police personnel and local volunteers recovered his body from the debris.
“Our boy was a gem and an invaluable treasure for our Academy. In the early hours of September 12, at around 05:30 local time (LT), a landslide engulfed his home and tragically took him away from us,” said the Rafael Football Academy of which the boy was in their tribute to the victim.
SP Varte said two injured people were taken to Silchar in neighboring Assam for treatment, while two others were admitted to Vairengte Community Health Center.
The landslide destroyed two houses and another structure, according to Varte. One house was described as a two-story timber residence, while another affected structure was described as an Assam-type building. Three families comprising 17 people occupied the affected buildings.
Meanwhile, a landslide at Simlong has blocked National Highway 306, disrupting traffic between Mizoram and Assam. Hill runoff has also flooded low-lying areas in Lailapur and Frenchnagar, with water entering several homes.
The India Meteorological Department’s Met Center Aizawl had issued a regional warning on September 11 for heavy rain across Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on September 12, together with thunderstorms, lightning and squally conditions.
Vairengte is one of three subdivisions of Kolasib district, which lies along Mizoram’s northern boundary with Assam. The Kolasib District Disaster Management Plan states that landslides occur repeatedly during periods of heavy rainfall in the district and identifies Vairengte subdivision as having a moderate landslide hazard classification.
