Large wildfire damages structures in Otsuchi, Japan
A large wildfire in Otsuchi, Japan, on April 22, 2026, caused structural damage and evacuations after spreading from woodland into residential zones. Two separate wildfire incidents were reported in Otsuchi by afternoon local time, according to aggregated emergency reporting and secondary sources. Japan’s national alert system classified the situation as a large-scale fire affecting parts of the town.
The first fire reportedly ignited at 13:55 LT in the Kozuchi district, while a second fire was identified at approximately 16:20 LT in the Kirikiri area.
Available data shows the fires burned approximately 9 ha (22 acres) of forested land and spread into adjacent residential areas. At least five buildings were destroyed as the fire moved beyond vegetation into built structures. The figures are based on secondary sources and have not yet been confirmed by issuing authorities.
According to local media reports, approximately 130 people moved to evacuation centers. No injuries have been reported.
