Tornado damages airport, homes, bank and animal shelter in Bloomington, Indiana
A tornado struck Bloomington, Indiana, on Thursday, February 19, 2026, causing damage to Monroe County Airport, multiple homes, a bank branch, and an animal shelter as severe storms moved through southern Indiana.

A tornado moved through Bloomington during the evening hours of Thursday, February 19, leaving a trail of damage across the city.
The Monroe County Airport sustained damage to fencing and rooftop sections of outbuildings. Portions of airport infrastructure were visibly impacted, and access to certain areas was temporarily restricted while officials assessed the damage.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reported winds of up to 112 km/h (70 mph).
Residential neighborhoods east of the airport reported damage to roofs and siding as the winds scattered debris across roadways. Emergency responders conducted door-to-door checks to provide assistance.
A Fifth Third Bank branch on West Third Street sustained roof and exterior damage. Nearby commercial properties also reported structural impacts, including damage to roofing materials and displaced debris affecting adjacent lots.
The Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA) animal shelter also reported damage to its facility.
“I want to confirm that MCHA’s campus was hit by tonight’s storm. While we assess damage, I’m relieved all animals are safe and in trusted care,” said Andrew Krebbs, Executive Director of MCHA.
“I want to thank our board members, staff, and trusted partners who ensured we secured the facility and relocated animals,” he added.
Pea-sized to ping pong ball-sized hail and strong winds were reported. Survey teams are expected to investigate damage in Sullivan and Monroe counties. Additional areas may be surveyed as more damage information is received.
