Sand miner trapped by large lahar on Mount Semeru, Indonesia

A large lahar triggered by heavy rains on Mount Semeru trapped a man in the Regoyo River in East Java, on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

Heavy rainfall over Mount Semeru caused a lahar that struck the Regoyo River in Lumajang Regency, East Java, on Sunday.

The lahar was first recorded at around 13:00 local time (LT) with a maximum amplitude of 45 mm (1.77 inches), according to the Mount Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PPGA).

A sand miner was trapped in the middle of the Regoyo River during the lahar’s peak flow, according to Kompas.

The man was reportedly from Gondoruso Village, Pasirian District, in Lumajang, and survived without being swept away. Meanwhile, a truck was also reportedly stranded by the flood.

In addition, roads leading to three hamlets in Gondoruso Village and Tempursari District were reported to be cut off after the overflow bridge.
