Drainage failure suspected after sinkhole swallows truck in Mexico City
A soda delivery truck collapsed into a sinkhole in the Iztapalapa borough of Mexico City on September 13, 2025. Preliminary reports suggest the collapse was caused by failure of the borough’s drainage system.
A road sinkhole opened in the Iztapalapa borough of Mexico City on September 13, 2025, swallowing the rear of a Jarritos soda delivery truck. The incident occurred at around midday, causing no injuries.
Videos circulating on social media show the truck partially subsiding before sinking deeper as its weight caused further ground collapse. Civil protection units secured the area, diverted traffic, and began assessments to determine the scale of the damage.
Aleida Alavez, the mayor of Iztapalapa, visited the site and stated that initial reports point to a collapse of the borough’s drainage system as the cause of the sinkhole.
Sinkholes occur frequently in Mexico City due to a combination of factors, including aging infrastructure, heavy rainfall, and unstable subsoil.
Mexico City, built on a former lakebed of soft sediments and affected by widespread subsidence from groundwater extraction, is particularly prone to ground failures in boroughs such as Iztapalapa.
